Background: Miles grew up the son of a stable hand, and started learning to care for horses early on. He enjoyed imagining that he was a swashbuckling knight, riding to the rescue of fair maidens, and putting evil-doers to the sword. When his work was done, he would take to the streets and found he could capture the imaginations of other children with his stories. He would lead others through capers and adventures, much to the chagrin of the local folk, although the good mothers could never quite stay angry with Miles for long. Around the age of 11, however, things started to go wrong. Miles seemed unable to keep the horses he worked with calm, and his adventures with other children more often than not were ending in fist fights over some perceived unfairness. Girls and their mothers would still dote on him, but this lead to a great deal of jealousy from the other boys. Unfazed by his difficulties, Miles continued pursuing adventures, and his passion and burgeoning Gift were noticed by Calidaria of Flambeau as she passed through town. She had not been looking for an apprentice, but Miles’ charm won her over, and she took him back to her covenant to begin his training.
